Joyous Pinwheels for Lacey

Lacey's Blue Green RugOne of my mom’s dearest friends is an amazing weaver, and we’ve regularly nerded out about our shared love of fibers. A year ago we struck a deal: a quilt for a rug. I still insist that I got the better end of the deal, as we ended up with a stunning custom rug that perfectly rounds out our new house.

Making a quilt for Lacey was just as much fun as receiving such a beautiful rug. Lacey is full of joy – she has an uncanny ability to make you feel at ease immediately, and within minutes you’ve let go of the pressure of the day and are laughing hysterically.

Inspired by an all-red and white quilt exhibition she had seen, Lacey knew exactly what she wanted for a quilt: a cherry-red pinwheel quilt with splashes of yellow. This simple pinwheel in bright red is an appropriately and unapologetically happy quilt. I found myself smiling every time I worked on it. Of course, I didn’t make it easy on myself and made the pinwheels small for a queen-size quilt, so the project took a few months.

It started out as a gazillion triangles (already joyous!):

Then transformed into 306 smiling wheels in red:
