For my dear friend Lauren’s wedding, I wanted to make a quilt that looked like an aspen grove. Did you know that the largest living organism on the planet is an aspen grove in Utah? Their root systems are all a long line – one anchor holding them all together and sharing nutrients between each tree. I always thought there was something beautiful about that, and a great tie to what marriage should do: stabilize you underneath the surface.

So aspens it was! I’m not sure that the end result would conjure that image for anyone but me, but that was the original intent.Aspen Forest Quilt from Pieced Together Quilts

Each of the square blocks was made from blue scraps, pieced together in strips of varying widths. I then sliced each square twice, at different angles and added in thin strips of light grey (theoretically to look like branches):

To build the “trunk” I sashed the vertical strips with thicker grey fabric, while the  horizontal sashing stayed thin:
